A Church With An Open Door

ree

We live in a moment when the Westernized Church shines with polish and production. Platforms glow, worship bands rival performing artists, and sermons are distilled into 28-minute TED Talks (with a sprinkling of Scripture). But beneath all the dazzle, a growing spiritual sleepiness is creeping in. The church is turning its back on the requirements of repentance and holiness.

It reminds me of Jesus’ sobering words to the church in Laodicea: “I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth” (Revelation 3:15-16).

The Laodiceans probably thought they were thriving. They had resources, influence, and the admiration of their culture. But Jesus saw something very different. He saw a Bride drifting off course, thinking she was awake when, in truth, she was asleep.

We can draw a crowd without building a Church. Let’s build the Church and share the hope of the Gospel with the crowd. It’s up to them if they follow. Jesus fed the five thousand, but He discipled twelve. When the crowd didn’t like His message, they walked away (John 6:66).

Jesus didn't slam the door on Laodicea—He knocked on it. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20).

It’s not up to us to point fingers at the sleeping church. May we lovingly but intently awaken them. Jesus does the knocking.

CrossWay, this is our moment to ensure our door is wide open. Let’s resolve to stay spiritually awake and measure success not by how many seats are filled, but by how many hearts are set ablaze for Christ. Jesus isn’t coming back for a corporation—He’s coming back for a Bride who is pure, awake, and ready. Let’s be that Bride.
