This weekend, we pause to celebrate and honor one of God’s greatest gifts to humanity—mothers. Whether biological, adoptive, or spiritual, mothers carry a unique and God-given role that shapes hearts, homes, and generations.
For me, this reflection begins with my mother (Cookie), who raised me as a single mom from the time I was just three years old. I didn’t always see it then, but looking back now, I realize the weight she carried and the countless sacrifices she made. She worked hard, prayed harder, and carried our home forward with grace, grit, and unwavering love. Today, I have the privilege of pastoring the same church where she worships, and I’m profoundly grateful for her faith and perseverance.
I also think of Andrea, the mother of our son Noah, and the woman who daily embodies the strength, wisdom, and beauty of godly motherhood. She has navigated motherhood with boldness and tenderness, shaping our home with patience, intentionality, and Christ-centered love. She makes me proud to walk beside her in life and ministry.
But as we celebrate, let us also acknowledge those for whom this day brings a quiet ache—those who grieve the loss of a mother, those who long for children, those who have experienced miscarriage, broken relationships, or deep disappointment.
We are reminded of a powerful moment in Scripture when Simeon prophesied over Mary, the mother of Jesus. After blessing the infant Messiah, he turned to Mary and said:
“And a sword will pierce through your own soul also…” (Luke 2:35).
Even Mary, chosen to bear the Son of God, knew the heartache and anguish of a mother’s journey. Motherhood brings profound joy and sorrow, often in the same breath.
So this Sunday, we honor the mothers who are present, the ones who are missing, and the ones we hold in our prayers. We bless those who mother children not biologically their own, and those who mother through mentorship, discipleship, and spiritual care.
Proverbs 31:28 says, “Her children rise up and call her blessed.” Let us do the same.
Thank you for your prayers whispered behind closed doors.
Thank you for your late nights, early mornings, and countless sacrifices.
Thank you for pointing your children—and this church—toward Jesus.
To all the mothers among us: we thank you, see you, and honor you. May you feel the love of your church family and the presence of the Lord who entrusted you with such a sacred calling.
